Daylights Savings Time Facts

Daylights Savings Time

There's a spike in heart attacks during the first week of Daylight Saving Time, according to a study published in 2008.

People are safer drivers during daylight hours, and researchers have found that Daylight Saving Time reduces lethal car crashes and pedestrian strikes.

Two states — Arizona and Hawaii — and four U.S. territories — American Samoa, Guam, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands — don't observe Daylight Saving Time. Indiana adopted Daylight Saving Time in 2006.

Daylight Saving Time was first used during World War I, as part of an effort in the United States and other warring countries to conserve fuel. In theory, using daylight more efficiently saves fuel and energy because it reduces the nation's need for artificial light.

The first American to advocate for daylight saving was Benjamin Franklin. He realized in 1784 that many people burned candles at night yet slept past dawn in the summer, wasting early-morning sunlight.

Red Cross Acts of Courage

The American Red Cross annually presents the Acts of Courage Awards to those residents of Summit County who have acted courageously and selflessly in a time of emergency. Often at great risk and sacrifice to their own personal safety, comfort, and well-being, these ordinary individuals have acted in a heroic manner by reaching out to help others in times of greatest need. During the ceremony, the Red Cross will also present retired Deputy Mayor for the City of Akron, Mr. Dave Lieberth, with the H. Peter Burg Community Leadership Award for his commendable, constant and compassionate service in our local community.

The concept for the Acts of Courage Awards grew out of a desire to develop a special event that is closely related to the humanitarian mission of the American Red Cross. What better way to celebrate this spirit of humanitarianism than by honoring those individuals who have shown courage, kindness and unselfish character by their acts of heroism.

Radio Murders

The Radio Murders is a simple idea; a radio talk show about real-time murder, As It Happens with a deadly twist.  How could such a thing exist? More importantly, how could it become an entertainment vehicle? Written by Chuck Collins, local author and Operatiions Manager at the Rubber City Radio Group.
