This terrific song was also on my 50 Favorites From 40 Years Countdown in 2023, at #48. It’s true, I love this song, but I also feel this song has its place on this list. Truth be told, (and breathe), she will appear higher on this list as the weeks roll on. But this list is about songs that helped shape, or make a difference in our format in this new century. And this song did. The first time I really listened closely to this song, I knew we were going to lose one of our biggest stars to pop radio, and format. This song is so good, and I feel this was a real turning point for her, as the roles within the song are reversed from her norm then, and this was very adult. The video here is great too. Combined with an amazingly grown up, powerful and big music track and a very slick arrangement and delivery, this was a very different kind of single for her at the time. But it was clear, her time on the country charts was limited as this was a real switch. A songwriting award winning song, that peaked at #3 on the country charts, and did well pop too, also going 4 times platinum. This is honest, sad, very relatable and just flat out good, even it it did signal the beginning of the end of her country charting career. It’s always news when you lose one of your biggest stars. I feel this is the best song she has ever written.
