Katy Perry had suggested that Jelly Roll might be a great replacement for her when she stepped away from the American Idol judges table last season. And though that spot ultimately went to former Idol winner Carrie Underwood, Jelly still has a role in this season’s competition.
Jelly will appear as the newly created Artist-in-Residence. He’ll be there for Hollywood Week, advising and guiding the contestants, and making appearances throughout season 23. Of course, Jelly previously appeared in season 22 as a performer and “guest mentor,” but this year’s appointment will make him a more permanent part of the show.
American Idol premieres Sunday, March 9th on ABC, streaming on Hulu.
