If you’ve wondered why the Browns have the worst record in the NFL since returning in 1999, the past couple of weeks have supplied some possible answers. I know there have been a number of regimes here since ’99, and there have been errors made by many different people in various positions but what we have now is responsible for the here and now.
There are 32 teams in the NFL, and right this minute about every single one of them know who’s going to be their QB. Certainly those that want to be taken seriously. But we don’t. I also can’t think of one that also seems to hide who is playing QB until kickoff sometimes. We have and do. Most of the really good teams play their QB in preseason to a degree, we don’t. And I don’t know of any good franchise that seems to go out of their way to make this the most complicated thing on earth.
On opening day, in my view the choice is clear, Joe Flacco should run out there and lead the Browns into the 2025 season. But I’m not at all confident the Browns see it the same way. From my seat, he’s the clear choice and I feel most of the veteran players would feel the same way, as he probably gives you the best chance to win NFL games. With the other choices being Kenny Pickett and then two rookies that were just drafted. The fans want to see Flacco, and the Browns risk being booed at home on the first series of the season if he’s on the bench
I’m still confused on the two draft picks. Using a 3rd and 5th rounder on Dylan Gabriel and Shadeur Sanders when so many other position groups need attention. I don’t know what the
Browns have planned for them, I’m not sure they do either, and that points to the problem. This is not the way other teams do it. If these guys are NOT part of the future or the here and now for this team, what the heck are they doing here?
Let’s figure this out, they have no money because of the Watson deal, but he’s technically still on the roster. So 5 QB’s. One is hurt, ineffective, and killing the salary cap. One is 40. One is a journeyman with no real success. One is undersized and may never play a meaningful down. And the other was passed on 143 times by the rest of the NFL. When you say it out loud it makes it real doesn’t it? No one else has these problems.
So, as the off season continues, let’s hope for some clarity. In the meantime, let’s watch how this plays out, should be entertaining anyway.
