Not many artists in country have been as original as the Mavericks.  Not many can blend the amount of musical styles as them, and invent something 100% original.  The Mavericks are a band that has to be experienced as opposed to simply listening to them, or reading about their charting success, or sadly their lack of it.

This Song Got Them Noticed

Founded by lead singer Raul Malo and bassist Robert Reynolds (who was once married to Trisha Yearwood) in Miami.  The common thread with those two guys was their love for old school rockers like Johnny Cash, Elvis, Roy Orbison and others.  Those stars of course blended many types of music together and invented their own sound as would the Mavericks.  They added two more members and became very popular in South Florida rapidly after their founding in 1989.

When they went to Nashville at the start of the big country boom of the 90’s it seemed there would be room for them.  After scoring a record deal, they had limited chart success, but had the amazing fortune to have two of their albums go two times platinum each.  A truly amazing feat since they never had a single make the top ten.  But what was true, fans loved them.  They certainly were cut from a different cloth, and there was little doubt when they were on the radio you knew who was playing.

Their Biggest Hit #13

Over the years, the Mavericks have found a fan base that’s in and out of country.  They made a career out of being original, talented and finding fans at festivals and concerts outside of our format, while still keeping those in country.  They are just good, it’s as simple as that. Their album, Music For All Occasions to me is mandatory owning, as it is an incredible example of how they could marry many musical styles into the “Maverick Sound.”

Raul Malo is one of the best lead vocalists we’ve ever had, with a distinct delivery the cuts through.  He also has amazing versatility where he can sing about an kind of song, in any style.  The Mavericks too always put on a great show, and are very engaging with their fans.
