This is Garth’s second song on my list (If Tomorrow Never Comes #12), will it be his last? The early Garth stuff was very important in our history as when he showed up he changed many things. He was part of the amazing class of 1989, with Alan Jackson, Clint Black and Travis Tritt that really set the stage for country in 1990’s especially. Garth emerged as the gigantic world wide star. This song was a very big part of every big thing he did then. Even though this was recorded first on an album by Mark Chesnutt, (His Version) the Brooks version of course is the staple and classic. It was even first released by David Wayne Chamberlain in 1989 to no success. Garth was lucky enough to record the demo for this song before his real stardom cut loose as well. This was Garth’s 5th single and went number one as you might expect. It was the follow up to The Dance which really propelled Garth to the top of the charts and in people’s hearts. The No Fences album this is from is one of the biggest selling albums of all time, and this song was a huge part of that. The Dance and If Tomorrow Comes got him noticed, but this song made Garth a household name. ACM and CMA Single Of The Year 1990, 4 weeks #1. Still played, still a favorite and in my view the song that Garth will always be remembered for, and that’s a big deal considering he recorded so many incredibly big songs.
