When this was out, it really hit a lot of people deep for many reasons. This may be as sad as any song anywhere can be. But during its time on the charts, this was exceedingly popular, and our phones at WQMX rang off the hook for it. Sad may not be strong enough word as it deals with extreme heartbreak and life’s finality. This song has a very interesting past as it was written by country singer Jon Randall and country legend Bill Anderson. Randall was married to Lorrie Morgan for a while, and when they divorced, he fell into a huge depression. Then he met Anderson. It you don’t know who that is, Anderson is an old schooler, who ran off a line of hits from the 60’s till the early 80’s. He was knows as “Whisperin Bill” as his style was very easy and laid back. He though, was a terrific song writer. They penned this together as Randall had lost much, his marriage, record deal, and his writing contract too. The song ended up with Paisley, and the duet partner was down to two singers, Alison Krauss or Dolly. This song was a very big hit, reaching #3 on the charts and going multi-platinum. It’s hard to think of this song as one that was “loved”, because of its harsh subject matter, but it was and is. This is powerful, and for many reasons, the pain within this song spoke to many. One of the biggest hits of Paisley’s terrific career. It’s a later generations, He Stopped Loving Her Today.
