Regardless of how you may feel about Taylor Swift, one has to tip the cap to her insanely huge following and career. It’s been a while since she was country, but there was a time she was dominating our charts, and selling albums buy the truckload. Her first two country singles did well, but this song was the one that put the accelerator down and helped make her a real force. This simple little song went #1, sold millions and made fans feel that she was just like them. Even at her young age her songwriting was on point, being so incredibly targeted it simply couldn’t miss. (Legend says she wrote this as a high school freshman). Her strength then, is her strength today – she possesses the absolute ability to know exactly who is listening to her music. She does it better than anyone, and has since the start. It’s her superpower. Because beyond the slick video’s and huge stage show productions, there’s the music. And she knows her audience – and she knows how to get those who aren’t fans yet.
