We Were Us – Kieth Urban And Miranda Lambert – 2013
Hard to believe this is 11 years old, but it’s true. Right up front, I am not big on the amount of duets we do. In Country we do way too many, and most turn out to be simply OK, to meh. I feel many times the motive is to prop a talent that is struggling or introduce a new act. There is also an attempt many times to make an average song seem far better as well. But there are times they work very well and are perfectly conceived. That is this song. At this time, both of these two were at the peak of their popularity and this song seems to be a celebration of that fact. There is no ulterior motive to record this song, the idea was to just do something good! I have always marveled at just how well Urban embraces duets, and seemingly relinquishes the spotlight for his partner in song and onstage. It’s very rare that ego doesn’t win out. He understands he’s PART of a good team at that moment and not a spotlight hog. I’ve seen this from him live in concert and in video. It’s hard not to love this song, and the feeling between these two in this video. As much as we do too many duets this one was a good idea, going #1, and selling over a million. Great record!
