Original is the best word to describe this duo that had a fast, but fruitful run.  You still do see them together in various situations, and that’s great.  But here we will take a look back at their time on the charts and the impact they had, which was sizable. With music and a sound that was original, as were the videos.

From the moment they showed up they were clearly cut from a different cloth in their music, their style, and their direction.  John Rich was a founding member of Lonestar, and “Big” Kenny Alpin was a solo artist.  They joined to shake things up and carve out a new way to do country, and for the most part, they succeeded.

They formed the Muzik Mafia, which consisted of Gretchen Wilson, Cowboy Troy,  James Otto, and Shannon Lawson.  All of them originals too, and this movement gained steam especially in pop culture.  Big And Rich released their first album Horse Of A Different Color in 2004 and it was a gigantic success going 3X Platinum, and having 4 singles off of it, but none of them big charting songs.

Huge Hit  – Fans Still Love This –  #11

But Save A Horse,  was a huge hit in clubs, with fans and in pop culture.  It only went to #11, but was loved, and will be played for generations on country radio and about every where else.  It’s the hit every star hopes for when they step off the bus arriving in Nashville.

I Love This Song  #20

Over the course of a few years, they rattled off a string of highly original songs that in a chart sense were not huge hits, but were with fans. They are very popular and their music has been used and enjoyed in many different ways, from the theme to College Football broadcasts to commercials, and in fans pickup trucks.  And yes, they did have one #1 song, Lost In This Moment, which is a great song, but worlds away from regular Big And Rich style.

These guys were darn good, and immensely popular.  I miss their originality and their lightheartedness.  They are wonderful example of being what fans want their stars to be.  Fun, different, cool and original.
