10 Ways to Save Money at the Bar

Is one of your resolutions to save some money this year? Here’s a way to save cash and still visit your favorite watering hole …

10. Get a designated driver. Cheaper than a cab … or a DUI

9. Drink before you go out. Get your buzz on before you hit the bar and you won’t have to buy as many drinks.

8. Avoid bars with covers. A no-brainer.

7. Buy pitchers of beer when possible.

6. Buy beer on tap or get drinks with house liquor.

5. Eat before you go out.

4. Split the food order with your buddies. Ordering some appetizers for the table will be cheaper than each of you buying something to eat.

3. Set a budget. Not always easy to stick to once you’ve had a few – so maybe bring cash and leave the cards at home.

2. Expensive early, cheap later. If you like premium scotch, make your first few drinks the good stuff. Then switch to cheaper swill once you’re already buzzed.

1. Stay home. (Askmen.com

Cold Weather Precautions

During cold weather, you should take the following precautions:

Stay indoors as much as possible and limit your exposure to the cold;

Dress in layers and keep dry;

Check on family, friends, and neighbors who are at risk and may need additional assistance;

Know the symptoms of cold-related health issues such as frostbite and hypothermia and seek medical attention if health conditions are severe.

Bring your pets indoors or ensure they have a warm shelter area with unfrozen water.

Minimize travel. If travel is necessary, keep a disaster supplies kit in your vehicle.Make sure your vehicle has an emergency kit that includes an ice scraper, blanket and flashlight – and keep the fuel tank above half full.

  • Finally--Make a Family Communications Plan. Your family may not be together when disaster strikes, so it is important to know how you will contact one another, how you will get back together and what you will do in case of an emergency. And Listen to a NOAA Weather Radio or other local news channels for critical information from the National Weather Service (NWS). Be alert to changing weather conditions.

10 Safety Tips From Cops

Everyone should take 5 minutes to read this. It may save your life or a loved one's life. In daylight hours, refresh yourself of these things to do in an emergency situation... This is for you, and for you to share with your wife, your children & everyone you know. After reading these 9 crucial tips, forward them to someone you care about. It never hurts to be careful in this crazy world we live in.

1. Tip from Tae Kwon Do: The elbow is the strongest point on your body. If you are close enough to use it, do!

2. Learned this from a tourist guide. If a robber asks for your wallet and/or purse, DO NOT HAND IT TO HIM. Toss it away from you... Chances are that he is more interested in your wallet and/or purse than you, and he will go for the wallet/purse. RUN LIKE MAD IN THE OTHER DIRECTION!

3. If you are ever thrown into the trunk of a car, kick out the back tail lights and stick your arm out the hole and start waving like crazy. The driver won't see you, but everybody else will. This has saved lives.

4. Women have a tendency to get into their cars after shopping, eating, working, etc., and just sit (doing their checkbook, or making a list, etc. DON'T DO THIS!) The predator will be watching you, and this is the perfect opportunity for him to get in on the passenger side, put a gun to your head, and tell you where to go. AS SOON AS YOU GET INTO YOUR CAR, LOCK THE DOORS AND LEAVE. If someone is in the car with a gun to your head DO NOT DRIVE OFF, Repeat: DO NOT DRIVE OFF! Instead gun the engine and speed into anything, wrecking the car. Your Air Bag will save you. If the person is in the back seat they will get the worst of it. As soon as the car crashes bail out and run. It is better than having them find your body in a remote location.

How to Find True Love (from the movies!)

Admit it ... you secretly love watching those made-for-TV holiday movies! Between Lifetime, Hallmark and ABC Family you can successfully watch Holiday  movies 24 hours a day. The most popular movies always center on the perfect holiday romance, and if you're looking for love this winter why not take a few tips from these sentimental sappy tales?! Here are the guaranteed ways to find love during the holidays, as told by made-for-TV Holiday movies:

  • If you already have a boyfriend but he isn't really into the holidays – DUMP HIM! He's definitely too busy for you on account of the fact that he is CEO of Unspecified Company in Generic Industry and Very Important – too important for silly holiday cheer. You need to take a chance on the super hot single hunk who will take you out skating and buy you hot cocoa with extra marshmallows. He is most likely a widower with young children desperate for a family Christmas or a skilled wood worker/clock-maker/foreign prince of a fake country with amnesia, or your now super successful high school hometown crush.

  • Track Down Your Now-Famous High School Ex: This guy is not only single, but he still loves you after years and years apart!

  • Move Back to the Small Town You're From: If you moved to the big city and either lost your high paying job or need to sell out your hometown in some way to secure a big deal and or secure the oh so important Christmas Eve deal, be prepared to not only have a change of heart about the holidays and the small town you came from, but you will definitely reconnect with your friend from youth who is now super hunky!

  • Tell Santa that all you want for Christmas is a boyfriend: Chances are he will deliver the perfect guy to you that you will coyly turn down until finally realizing the Christmas spirit and your undying love for him!

  • Spend an inordinate amount of time with your hot boss who is outwardly mean: Chances are he is a real sweetie at heart ... He just had something horrible happen to him during a past holiday that you will clearly be able to help him get over so that you two can realize how perfect you are for each other and fall madly in love!

Moderation Is Key

It's the holidays and through New Years,  we will continue to be surrounded by delicious food. How can we avoid packing on the pounds – without giving up our favorite foods? Here are some helpful tips to keep your eating in check:

  • Take control the moment you wake up – Recognize that you will be tempted and just vow to not stuff yourself silly.

  • Don't skip breakfast – By skipping breakfast, you will be more likely to overeat later on.

  • Load your plate with variety, not volume – Instead of heaping your plate with tons of food, take a couple of your favorite items to nibble on. Enjoy everything, but not in mass quantities.

  • Forget the "all or nothing" mindset – Instead, think "moderation" and choose a smaller plate if you start craving larger portions.

  • Savor it all – Tasting food before swallowing leaves us feeling more satisfied, which might take the edge off our hunger before a party.

Holiday Relationship Advice

Christmas is almost here, and spending time with family can be the best — and worst — part of the holidays. Cramped quarters, conflicting personalities, and childhood baggage means tensions can run high, especially when you don't have any time to yourself. But with a little creativity, you can find ways to squeeze in alone time, and avoid a meltdown. Here are a few:

  • Offer to be the errand-runner: If you're craving a little time to yourself, speak up when your mom mentions she's out of sugar. Even a few minutes in the car blasting music (or just sitting in silence) can be enough to pull you back from the brink.
  • Go for a walk: Can't take another second of togetherness around the fire? Suggest a brisk after-dinner walk. True, you usually can't get away with doing this one all by yourself, but even the most grating of family members can be more palatable outdoors in the crisp air. And if all else fails, walk fast.
  • Put on your dishwashin' gloves: Offering to take on clean-up duty is a double whammy. You'll earn brownie points for pitching in, and since only so many helpful hands can tackle a sink of dishes, you'll get a little QT with just you and the suds.

Holiday Etiquette: Tips or Gifts?

When you don't want to slip your super, hairstylist, or babysitter an envelope of cash, it's appropriate to buy them a present instead, says Lizzie Post, coauthor of Lizzie Post's Etiquette, 18th Edition. Follow these guidelines:

1. Spend roughly the amount you would have given in cash.

2. Don't explain why you wanted to gift instead of tip. Just hand over the gift and thank them for their services.

3. If you know the person pretty well, pick out a gift for them as you would for a friend (in other words, get them something related to one of their hobbies or interests). If you don't know them well, buy a classic gift.

Holiday Shopping Made Easier

When it comes to holiday shopping, a lot of us are making things way harder than they have to be.

The Journal for Consumer Research, Inc. found that we tend to avoid getting people on our Christmas list the same gift, even if we think that person will really like the gift.

Apparently we look at buying the same gift for multiple people as taking the “easy way out.

MORE: The Hardest Person to Shop For This Holiday Season

For the study, researchers conducted a series of six experiments to see how participants selected gifts for others. Turns out, when picking a gift for one person, the participants were more likely to choose something they thought the recipient would genuinely like. But when shopping for multiple people, participants were hesitant to get more than one person the same type of present (even if they thought both recipients would like it).

MORE: Holiday Etiquette: When to Give Gifts, Rather Than Tips

"People will avoid getting the same gift for more than one person because it feels like the easy way out," says co-study author Mary Steffel, Ph.D., an assistant professor in the department of marketing at the University of Cincinnati. What's more, they'll do this even when they know the recipient might prefer something else.

The solution? Just focus on what you think each person on your list would like—and don't worry if that sometimes is the same thing for multiple people.
