Last week, my friend Jim let me know his WQMX 15 Minute Break was going to play.  He picked 4 great songs from 4 great artists.  Saturday at my Send Me Backstage Ticket Stop at Zombie Johns, I was asked what my 15 Minute Break would be?   I mean I am pickin' songs all the time and playin' them for you.  It was going to take a lot of thinkin'.  There are soooo many options but my right now in this moment, I think mine would be...

Jake Owen - Down to The Honkytonk

Eric Church - Springsteen

Jon Pardi - Night Shift

Nitty Gritty Dirt Band - Fishin in The Dark

This is my right now.  What is your right now?  Join in the fun maybe Cherise will play your WQMX 15 Minute Break.

Have I Found The Solution?

I don't know what is going on or why it happened, but I've noticed that the weeds are out of control this year! Actually I have heard a lot of people say that, so it was my mission to find something to combat them. But also, I have children and a dog, so it has to be a safe way to combat them, and I am tired of digging them up!

Behold!

America - Waylon Jennings - 1984

This Week We Start The Top 25 On My List

SW small Logo This was closer to the end than the beginning of Waylon's great run on the country charts.  Jennings had racked up about 20 number ones, and changed things in country upon his arrival years earlier.  His leading  -  with others  - of the Outlaw Movement  is still being felt all these decades later.  They were just different, far edgier, and a new kind of country and a new kind of country star.  In the 1980's Waylon was not the same force he was in the 70's, but still found some gems and this is one of them. This song landed in the perfect hands, with his unmistakable voice that no matter what never wavered.  For some reason there are some songs that are just destined to end up where they belong.  Waylon sings this song that is more than honest about America, pointing out the good and the not so good of our great country.  This peaked in the top 10, but many of Jennings' songs didn't chart as high as they should have.  And even though this looks a bit dated, I think this video captures the essence of this song and country, while not being overdone.  The real beauty of this song, is its simplicity, it's just Waylon, being direct and honest. That's this - Happy birthday America.

Did she or didn't she?

While many of you may have been at Blossom watching Eric Church, I was seeing a different show. I went to see "Lizzie: The Musical" at The Knight Stage in Akron. A "different" take on the life and case of Lizzie Borden. It was sad, dark, at times hilarious, and overall pretty good. It looks into the motives she may have had to kill her father and step mother.

As you may remember, she was aquitted at trial in 1892. She lived quietly the rest of her life in Fall River, MA. Did she really kill them or not? I think she did and got away with murder. What do you think? If you'd like to see an interesting take on the case of the Borden family of Fall River, MA, I suggest you see this show. They have one more weekend (Friday and Saturday night) at the Knight Stage in Akron.

WYNN - Forgotten Jukebox J-12

Complicated  - Carolyn Dawn Johnson - 2001 - (Album - Room With A View)

SW small Logo This weeks gem is from the Canadian born and the remarkably talented, Carolyn Dawn Johnson.  In 2001 she released a masterpiece of an album, Room With A View.  I loved this album, and feel it's one of the best overall country albums of this newer century.  She is a wonderful singer, a hugely respected song writer, musician, and performer.  She has written for, toured with, and performed alongside a lengthy and evivable roll call of A-List country stars. Complicated was a top 5 hit Country and was top 15 on the Adult Contemporary Charts. The thing about this song was its sheer popularity with fans during its run.  I had just started at WQMX, and the phones rang off the hook for this super relatable song and its spot on message.  This album had a few other single releases including, Georgia,  and another terrific song, I Don't Want You To Go,  but this was the big hit. (Click On Those Too - Amazing).  CDJ  is an absolute inspiration for others to come from Canada and pursue their dreams in Nashville.  The fact that she didn't become a long time hit maker is still a mystery to me, and makes me sad.  She is incredibly talented in about every way there is to be.  This is a song you don't hear as much these days, and you probably should.  Chart position is one thing, popularity with listeners is quite another.  Fans LOVE this song.
