Star Trek Trilogy Time!

Ever have a craving? Not a food craving, but a desire to do something you wouldn't usually do? That was me last week! For some reason, I wanted to watch the J.J Abrams Star Trek trilogy. Why? I have NO clue! I'm not a Trekkie (if that's even how you spell it), I'm much more of a Star Wars fan, and I'd seen the first two like forever ago. There was no reason to do it, but I wanted to. So I got the movies from the library and I gave them a spin.

I had SO much fun watching these movies! They were funny, action packed, intense, and someone who knows next to nothing about Star Trek like me can be entertained! There were some moments that made my eyes roll, but overall I enjoyed them thoroughly. It was kind of serendipitous.

Remember to live long and prosper, and scratch whatever's got you itching to try!

Spring Has Sprung (In Theory)

Spring is "officially" here but I don't buy it. Sure it was nice out today, and UA is on spring break, and the sun is shining. But it just doesn't quite feel like spring yet. I love spring, it's mostly the weather, either rainy or a perfect cool over a lush green pasture. My favorite flower, daffodils, are planted everywhere thanks to spring. I can stop hiding under coats and hoodies. Everyone is in a better mood! So why am I so skeptical and less excited?

Because my seasonal allergies have not come back yet, and only then will it be spring. Hooray.

This Trailer Thursday, we're looking at the latest from Dreamworks! Ruby Gillman: Teenage Kraken looks like a fun twist on the typical coming of age film. It looks like a very colorful, action packed movie that will be a perfect addition to the summer movie lineup!

Check out the trailer below!

Ode to Breakfast

I'm filling in for Cherise this week (tune in from 10-3!) so that means I get to partake in a ritual I often neglect: breakfast!

I don't hate breakfast, it just isn't something I do daily anymore. I intermittently fasted for a very long time, usually only eating from noon to 8 pm. I'm starting to phase out of it, but with the way that my mornings usually go, my first meal isn't until the middle of the day. We also don't have a lot of breakfast food in our house. But since I'm waking up earlier, I can eat something before the show starts!

Yesterday I got an everything bagel with onion and chive cream cheese (aren't you glad you can't smell through the radio? lol) in honor of Everything Everywhere all at Once winning BEST PICTURE! I would've gotten lox but it was meatless Monday. Today I got a smoothie with spirulina powder, which made it green! It was great after my workout, which was also something I did this morning! Tomorrow I'll probably have one of the donuts we got this weekend!

One of my favorite breakfast foods is cereal, which sucks because since I don't regularly eat breakfast, I don't get big boxes of it or even a lot of milk. Maybe one day I'll get a bulk store membership and then get those variety packs with the mini boxes! Do they make them with Cap'n Crunch? That's my favorite so I hope so!

Hopefully my breakfast adventures can continue more frequently in the future!

This Trailer Thursday, we're kicking things old school and looking at the latest from the TMNT franchise: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem!

First of all, let's just all say a collective THANK YOU to Spiderman: Into The Spiderverse for opening the door to NOT GENERIC LOOKING CGI!!!! The art style is phenomenal. It also looks really fun, and like it's going to be pretty funny as well! Check out the trailer now!

Oscars Week: Tár

The second film I watched this week to prepare for the Oscars was Tár. This is a psychological drama about a maestro named Lydia Tár, and the unraveling of her actions as she prepares for a live recording of a piece. This probably wouldn't be something I would seek out in theaters, but that's what I love about the Oscars, it puts things on your radar.

I really liked this film. It's stylish, raw, refined, and Cate Blanchet performs extremely well. The editing is well done and helps tell the story, as it should. As a former musician it wasn't really hard for me to follow along, but I'm almost certain if you're not musically inclined you'll be able to follow along. The way Lydia presents herself, from her clothes to her ideals, is a kind of shield that she wears in this modern world, and attempts to protect her from the secrets she hides.

No major gripes with this one, there are times it feels slow and the ending feels like it takes forever, but overall the longer scenes are never boring, and the story is interesting overall. Probably an 8/10 for this one as well.

I hope you'll follow along this week as I catch up on all of the best picture nominees!

Oscars Week: Avatar: The Way of Water

This Sunday is the Oscars, and I'm going to catch up on all of the Best Picture Nominees I haven't seen yet with a different movie each day this week! Today I saw Avatar: The Way of Water.

Technically this was a double feature, I watched the first one again this morning before I went to the movies. I never actually finished it the first time I watched it, since I was on a plane. But it was a lot better and more action packed then I remembered!

Now onto The Way of Water. I liked this one a lot more than I thought I would! First of all it's gorgeous, which isn't surprising since the first film literally broke new ground. The story was really interesting for the most part, and the characters, new and old, were really fleshed out. I think the overall message of the film was also well said. I think it's definitely a strong contender for Best Picture.

I do have a few gripes, the main being (spoilers) bringing back the main villain after killing him off in the first one. I think it was a little redundant, and that there was definitely an opportunity to introduce a new antagonist. It's also a tad long, and there is filler, but I only noticed once or twice. It's mostly to show the scope of this new part of the world we haven't seen before, and it really is breathtaking.

I'm sure the people who wanted to see this already have, but if you haven't yet, definitely give both films a watch! 8/10 for now. Make sure to catch tomorrow's review!
