Gettin' Back Into Guitar

I've played a good number of instruments in my lifetime. My first experience learning music was with the recorder in elementary school, and I never really loved it. A few years went by, and in middle school I found myself taking private lessons on the trumpet. My instructor was a coworker of my mom's. He told me I have an ear for music and a solid playing tone, but I never really cared to take the time to practice or actually learn how to read treble clef. All I wanted to do was learn the Hawaii 5-0 theme; I never did. It was more of a task than an enjoyable experience for me, and around that same time my school began teaching us acoustic guitar.

Something about strumming and playing strings felt right, though acoustic guitar was never easy for me. I learned a few sloppy chords but picking individual notes was the most fun. Naturally, this led me to an interest in playing the bass guitar, as it was more suited to my skill set. On top of this, my best friend in school as well as my best friend in my neighborhood played the guitar, so they encouraged me to purchase my first setup so that we could play songs together.

I think this bass and amp combo may have been my first ever Amazon purchase, and for the $130 I spent on it all, I'm still impressed. Of course I still have this bass, and despite a relatively poor build quality and user-unfriendly playability, I have always enjoyed that axe. After playing some very nice basses (I think the most expensive one I've had the pleasure to play was a Rickenbacker in the $10k range) I could tell how clunky and cheap my original is, so I kept my eyes open for an upgrade.

This step-up came unexpectedly and I am forever grateful for how I came across my best bass. It's a tuxedo Peavey Milestone II or III, and it was given to me by the pastor of the church where I attended a youth group. It plays so nice. The action is perfect, it's a great weight and sound, and it just feels right to play. It's my ride or die. With this new bass, I practiced often and started to get pretty good. I became able to play along with most every song and even do some improvisation!

With my growing skill at the bass and my acquisition of both an acoustic and an electric, I decided to revisit the guitar. This time around was much more successful, and I learned many chords and songs. The acoustic in particular held the appeal that I could sing and play anywhere without an amp or any work to set up. These days, with the ease of just picking it up and going, I find myself playing it as much as my bass. I have always wanted an acoustic-electric bass guitar, though, and I think that having one would turn the tide back to bass almost exclusively.

Through the years I played some talent shows, attempted a couple bands, did a ton of jamming in the garage, and even braved a few open-mics. Those were the good old days for me, as an instrumentalist. My passion for playing has never diminished, but life got in the way and my priorities shifted away from bass. It's sad to admit just how many songs I've forgotten how to play. It seems like every time I learn a song it pushes an old one out of my head and into the gutter.  Oh well, that's what tab is for! Once I see how to play it, it usually comes back to me instantly.

Anyhow, I've recently been pushing myself to play for at least a little bit every day, and it's great to be back at it. I've been playing some electric with the song Cigarette Daydreams as my latest challenge, and am actively trying to get some country tunes in my arsenal. I learned a few Hardy songs that are super fun to sing and play as well as Jersey Giant, and am still on the lookout for more music that matches my skill level to play around the bonfire! Most of all, I'd love to jam with my musician friends again, so maybe I'll see what they're up to this weekend.

Willy What???

This one looks interesting.   I am still a big Gene Wilder Fan.  But we'll see how this one turns out?  And if Grandpa Joe is still a jerk.

My Top Ten: Childhood Toys

Sometimes I feel like a big kid. By that, I mean I cannot go through a supermarket without checking out the toy aisle. I know many adults hunt for rare items to resell online, but when it comes to buying out toys meant for children I'm not a fan of that. No disrespect. If there's some collectible Funko Pop or similarly limited edition display-piece, that's totally different. Personally, I will scoop up every single El Camino in the store, and most appreciate the ones with cool paint and realism. If it's based on an actual vehicle, I usually dig it.

Anyways, there's so many options for toys these days and I must say I'm in no big hurry to have children. However, I cannot wait until the days my kiddos and I build Legos together, play vintage video games, and set up some crazy orange tracks from which to launch toy cars! I want to teach them guitar, bring them to the skate park, and all that good stuff; but here I go off track again. Pun intended!

With the rise in popularity of everything Barbie, as well as more advanced and downright radical products from major toymakers, I figured this may be a good time to talk about my favorite toys growing up, and some still today. I'll never not enjoy trying to grind a "rail" on a Tech Deck, and I'm anything but embarrassed to say so. I draw a line somewhere, but for the most part- like what you like! If you collect Beanie Babies still, sweet! If you're out there somewhere trying to use an Easy Bake Oven, right on!

With this, here's my top ten childhood toys. I'd love to hear what you enjoyed in your youth, and if you still keep any of them for whatever reason. Maybe you want to pass some stuff down to your children like my Dad did for me, or maybe you're saying, heck no! These are mine! Haha :)

It's the middle of October and I am giving away haunted house passes with movie trivia for WBOO-MX, so let's talk more about scary movies. My favorites are the Halloween series as well as the Scream series. Another one I really liked was Insidious - but I've only seen the first.

One that I DON'T like - The Strangers from 2008. The thing is...I actually DID like it, but it scares me to death!!! I remember seeing it in the theater and not being able to sleep well for probably about a week! I don't know that I am comfortable ever watching it again. The scene where Liv Tyler is standing in the kitchen and one of the killers come from out of the shadows behind her back already in the house did it for me...NO THANK YOU!

Enjoy your scary movie viewing this Halloween season!

Go Take a Hike!

Take a hike is a somewhat disrespectful phrase commonly used to tell somebody to go away; I'm sure you already know that. Today, I mean it literally. For your Wednesday in Northeast Ohio, the forecast is calling for sunny skies with daytime highs in the mid-60's! In the fall season, I couldn't ask for a better day than that in terms of weather. Whether you're hiking, biking, working outside around the house, or simply enjoying soaking up some of that Vitamin D; days like these are limited and it's best we make the most of each and every one.

A comfortable pair of jeans with a flannel or sweater is one of my favorite ways to dress, and temps like this call for just that. For my way into work this evening, with it being a bit more brisk outside, I pulled out my old leather jacket that I have lived a lot in and it feels so good to be back. I really enjoy having more options for matching and layers in clothing instead of being all but forced into rocking shorts and a t-shirt throughout summertime. I've also never owned a car with functional A/C, but my heat works great for these cooler mornings. The sunroof popped in the afternoon is just peak.

As a little side note, did it not feel as though we were robbed of a proper springtime this year? I feel like we just jumped from winter to summer and had a total deficit of hardly any 60 degree days. Maybe it's just me growing older, but I want it to be temperate for more than just a week! I love every season for their own reasons, but fall is by-and-large the favorite, so I'm hoping we get some weather which actually reflects autumn. If it snows one day in October, no problem! I just think that days like that should be the outliers, not your typical, expected fall temps.

Per the 2023 Farmer's Almanac, they are calling for a colder and snowier winter than last year, which is pretty cool. At least we've got that going for us. I plow driveways with my quad and was shorted last year by mother nature, leading to a real reduction in frequency of jobs and thereby profits for my hard work. I also hold the belief that if it is going to be cold, it had might as well be pretty (and often fun) outside. The lake I typically go out on was safe for like a week, for example, so I'm crossing my fingers for a nice deep freeze.

For now at least, it's fall and it does feel like it. So however you choose to, enjoy it!
