WYNN - COUNTRY MUSIC MEMORY LANE - Tanya Tucker
Jenny wondered if I could feature her favorite singer this week. In these stories I always look for the gift artists gave us in addition to their music. If you grew up listening to Leann Rimes, Taylor Swift, Scotty McCreery or even Kippi Brannon (in the early 1980's) you know they were all very young teens with country recording deals and songs. But before any of them, long before, there was the incredible Tanya Tucker. She has been recording since 1973 when she was 14, and is still a musical force and winning awards at 60 plus. I grew up with Tanya Tucker, in some way most of us did. Yeah, you know Delta Dawn, but there is way more to Tanya.
First Number One 1973 She was about 14 - Arrangement and Song Indicative Of The Era
Tanya Tucker is one of the best, most unique singers ever. Blessed with a voice that cuts through any kind of music and arrangement, and was light years more mature than most at 14. A voice so distinctive, so different, so - her. Over her career, especially early on she was on and off the country charts with her music, and with her image. One of her many gifts was she was Outlaw Country and proud of it. Pretty rare for a woman then. She then dumped the long dresses and gigantic hair most of the stars were wearing then, and invented a new image for herself. Shortly there after, most of the rest dumped the huge dresses and bouffant hair. She changed that game. In short, there were many, many stages of her career, and personal life, just like the rest of us. Difference is, the world didn't watch every move we made.

Tanya's 9th album, TNT raised tons of eyebrows in 1978. (BTW, she was 20 and had 9 albums and tons of hits songs already.) It was country-rock, it was new and very different, plus this album cover, (that would be pretty tame by today's standards) caused a real stir. It was very racy for its time and was not really accepted by the country world. Her career hit a wall, and chart success was slipping. Her personal life was the stuff of tabloids and she was tied or rumored to be in romantic relationships with Merle Haggard, Don Johnson, Andy Gibb, and Glen Campbell over the course of a number of years. She became more known for all of this - sometimes more than her music. But a massive reinvention was coming.

In 1986 Tucker began a long run of the best music she ever recorded. She was working with great people and rattled off a line of huge hit songs that went on for about the next 12 years. Many of these songs are country classics and are still loved today. Downloading a Greatest Hits album from her is a very good idea. She has recorded, sung and collaborated with about everyone you can think of. She performed at halftime of the 1996 Superbowl, and has played about every venue there is to play. In short, Tanya Tucker is a star. I've played every Tanya Tucker song she put on the country charts and proud of it.
This Song Is Universally Loved
Yes, we feature her music in this article, but she's more than that. Tanya Tucker was, and is a star. She's known by generations of people. And she has managed to keep herself relevant and out front. Some remember Delta Dawn, some remember her romance with Glen Campbell, some remember her TV days, her tumultuous days, and now others are discovering the Grammy Winning music she records today. You see, that's a star. When everyone knows your name. And everyone does. In one way or another, you know who she is. She's a game changer. She was the first to be so young and really make it. She, about single-handedly changed the image for women in country. Granted, it was not instant, but the change did come, and the fashion of Loretta was gone forever, never to return.
Mid 80's - Sounds Great Even With A More Pop Sound
And her voice. Her sensational, distinct, a few notes lower than most voice. When everything around Tanya was changing, or confusing, successful, or going fast or slow for her or the rest of us, there was that constant of her gift - her voice. She still sounds great, and there is still no doubt who is singing, even with your eyes closed. She was also famous for being who she is. She's Tanya Tucker by God. 88 singles, 40 in the top 10, 15 number one songs, and 25 million albums sold over a career that has lasted her lifetime. And she needs to be in the Country Music Hall Of Fame. Even though her road was tough at times, she's on a short list of being one of the biggest difference makers we've ever had.
Big Song - During Her Great 80's - 90's Run
We watched her grow up right in front of us, not many have to endure that, but she did. She blazed a trail that wasn't even there, and in the end, she got it right, rewarding us with decades of amazing versatile music and clearly it was not always easy.
But true greatness seldom is. Someone always has to be first, and she was.

WYNN - The Diamond Grille
Monday night I had the chance to eat at one of Akron's most Iconic restaurants, The Diamond Grille and I'm glad I did.
What a great, fun place.
The food was amazing. I mean really amazing. This is a place that really cares about the quality of the food, and afterwards you know you have eaten a great meal. I can't wait to go back. Great food, great service. Just fun.
What A Salad
Located downtown on Market Street, it's been there since 1935. It is a throwback kind of place and you feel that. I love places like that. You can feel the history, but the menu is certainly up to date, and what we had was terrific! I had the Longbone Steak, a huge bone-in rib-eye that took up the entire plate. I also had green beans, fantastic breads, and a salad that had to be experienced to be described.

Plus the Crab Cocktail was magnificent as an app. I enjoyed every single bite and I look forward to my next trip there hopefully soon. May take Windy there for her birthday
WYNN - This Is Very Cool!
I saw this last week when a friend and fellow pro, Chris Brooks, who does mornings in North Carolina at WMGV posted this on Facebook. This is a very cool thing. Click on this for something really different!
This shows you how imaginative people can be in the world. I love off the beaten path stuff, and this is certainly that. Great way to show support for fireman and first responders in general.

WYNN - Joe, Michael And The Coliseum
The past couple weeks gave us some tough news about local hero's passing away. Joe Tait, long time and much loved voice of the Cavs and Tribe, and of course Michael Stanley, a music icon in Northeast Ohio. So Thursday, I had to drive out to the only place fitting to sense the presence of both, the confluence of I-271 and RT 303 - the home of the now gone, Richfield Coliseum.
Let's tell a story about the 1970s' in our area. It was changing and challenging times for all manufacturing - and jobs around here. It was the time of the Browns being bad, the Tribe being beyond bad, both playing in old dilapidated Municipal Stadium with the wooden seats, porcelain trough urinals and the disastrous "Nickle Beer Night." It was the time of the river on fire a few years earlier, and endless jokes about us on TV. - The Edmund Fitzgerald tragedy. - The Cavs were awful in their early years and their first home, the Cleveland Arena was worse as it was a dark, dank, dinosaur downtown leftover with wooden seats from the 1930's. The music scene was generally good as always, but the live venues were aging, but it's what we knew, and we didn't mind. The area needed a Miracle - and we got one.
The beginning - of the beginning - was in 1974 when the Richfield Coliseum opened. It was something like we never saw. The gigantic, beautiful entertainment mecca would become the maker of millions of great memories for hundreds of thousands of people. It was the new home of the Cavs, the Miracle In Richfield, endless shows, the Circus, Truck and Tractor pulls, Motorcycle racing on ice, the Royal Lipizzaner Stallions, concerts, the Crusaders, and the Force. But most importantly for two incredibly popular and influential people. - Joe Tait and Michael Stanley and the MSB
Stanley set records there. I saw him do a big New Years Eve Concert at the Coliseum in 1981 at the height of the MSB. That place shook that night like few places ever have. Fans exploding with pride, looking for and now finding something to cheer for and be proud of. The Coliseum had a heartbeat, and it was supplied by us walking through its veins. That night Michael Stanley was the most popular singer on earth, as the local guy really made good. He was ours, he was playing in this beautiful jewel, on top of the world and he took all of us with him. Hey, everyone from Sinatra to John Denver, to Elton John played there over the years, but ask anyone from this area, and they'll remember Michael Stanley's show first by a mile. Stanley, in one night, became synonymous with the Coliseum, and would remain so forever. I don't know who else has ever really done that.
Great MSB Song
Joe Tait started doing Cavs games in 1970, the same year they entered the NBA. The Cleveland Arena was God-awful, but the amazing Coliseum was the envy of the entire Midwest. The Cavs had the miracle season in 1975-76 when they had the first playoff run by any Cleveland team in a long while. Their new home, the Coliseum was so loud it literally shook and was deafening. But somehow we heard Joe Tait's voice cut through it all and paint a picture so vivid, we were all there with him. When the Cavs eliminated the star-studded Washington Bullets in game five of the playoffs, it became one of the best moments in local sports history. This new building, with Joe Tait calling the game, with Akron's Nate Thurmond (Central Hower High School) being one of the season's difference makers, and Dick Snyder, a kid from Canton (Hoover High School) making the game winning shot and game saving defensive play. Tait, in that one night, became synonymous with the Coliseum, and would remain so forever. I don't know who else has ever really done that.
The Miracle In Richfield (This is a mix of Tait and others - But Tait where it matters!)
Wait, didn't I just say that?
Over the following years, Joe and Michael would have very similar paths. Tait would see a lot more basketball and made it sound like it was a game you didn't want to miss through your radio. Tait called the games with Price, Nance and Daugherty, and eventually Lebron, and Len Barkers perfect game pitched for the Tribe. The week of the Miracle that Tait called, the Cavs and the Coliseum set NBA records 3 times for the largest crowd to ever see an NBA Playoff game. Stanley would go on and record many great albums that we all loved and put on shows we didn't want to miss. He set attendance records at Blossom that still exist by selling out 4 nights in a week! He would also be forever immortalized at the Cleveland Agora, where the fantastic album, Stage Pass was recorded. These two gentlemen, for many years were Northeast Ohio icons, we loved them and accepted them into our lives as we would family or very close friends. We were proud to have the NBA's best announcer and music's favorite son call Northeast Ohio Home. - And they did - Forever.
Joe could have been the voice of any NBA team, but stayed here to build a legacy. Michael could have moved to Los Angeles and really go for it and leave us behind, but he stayed here to build a legacy. Turns out they loved us as much as we loved them. And that's why it all worked out so well. My hero's, MY teams, in My Town.
Michael Stanley - My Town
The Coliseum served us proudly until 1994 as a living, breathing place. It opened our eyes to better times and things ahead, as it proved to us we DID deserve beautiful new things around here. The Gund (The Q) came later, as did Jacobs Field (Progressive), and First Energy Stadium. The Theater District has been revived and is now the envy of the country. And the beginning of the beginning of all of this - was a big beautiful behemoth building built literally in a field - 25 miles from any downtown - 20 years earlier. It served a purpose that it never knew it was charted for. It began a renaissance for an entire region. The Coliseum is loved, missed, and incredibly important to this area for exactly that, and it's been gone for almost 30 years. It's been gone longer now than it was here and alive.
Two men, one place, both kings of the same castle - The Coliseum. Thank God for Joe Tait. Thank God for Michael Stanley. Thank God for a place where Miracles really did happen for an area that needed one at that moment. All synonymous with each other, and will remain so forever.
I don't know anywhere else, that has ever really done that.
WYNN - Charles Chips And Lawsons Dip!
A couple weeks ago, Windy and I were in a small market and we saw a can of Charles Chips potato chips at the checkout. That's right, a can. You may have never heard of them, but they do exist, and now you CAN get them in a bag, but the can brought back a memory or two.
This weekend we will all celebrate National Potato Chip Day, and I am totally in favor of this kind of holiday. And after a Google search, Charles Chips came up first in my search, or as my dad used to call them, Charlie Chips! We would get a big aluminum can of those chips and we would spend the week eating them. The can I saw last week was average size, but the can we used to get was HUGE!
They were and are delicious. They are potato chips that are just classic. You've seen the chip isle at the store recently. There are 5,000 flavors now and that's fantastic! But there are times I don't want a Sour Cream Chive BBQ Ranch Bacon Chip. (Although that does sound amazing - Ruffles All Dressed). There are times I want a regular salty, no ridge, no strange shape, no special flavor classic chip. And that's Charles Chips.
I know this will sound too good to be true but, the Charles Chips Truck used to come to the house and deliver potato chips to you. You paid and he came back the next week! Think about that Door Dash years ago with potato chips! We loved it, and that was a good day when they showed up. Sadly, there was no door to door Lawsons Dip delivery. But there should have been....Come to think of it, that would be amazing!!!
They are staging a comeback and that's good to know. Not in the delivery trucks but in the chips. If you've never tried them, give them a go. After all, this weekend it's National Potato Chip Day! Dip them in some Lawson's Chip Dip and you have a feast! Charles Chips are the Lawsons Dip of Chips!

WYNN - COUNTRY MUSIC MEMORY LANE - Kathy Mattea
Sue asked me about Kathy Mattea. She said she loved, and still loves her music and wished she heard her more often. What a talent Kathy Mattea was and is. She had great success on the country charts, and that's all well and fine, but she was so much more. Kathy Mattea was a flat out complete talent, with a great voice that was as good and pure as any woman ever in our format. (She also may have the most mispronounced last name in Country history)
Country Hits Didn't Get Much Bigger Than This
This article will be a bit different than most of the others I have written, which I feel is fitting because she was different than most of the others. Mattea's story isn't told by number one songs, platinum albums or charted success. It's told by her singing talent and what she was. What she was - was good. Very, very good. One of her great gifts was, you knew it was her singing, and you knew the song going to be meaningful above all else. You knew you were listening to a person who was - just good! She along with the great Suzy Bogguss of the same era, are among the best pure singers we have ever had.
Great Country Song
Mattea is blessed with a great singing voice that is hard to categorize. She sounds good singing any type of music and any tempo. Her roots of country, folk, and bluegrass gives her amazing versatility that is the envy of many. She had been singing, performing and recording for a number of years before she finally broke through for all of us to meet in 1986 with her first big song, Love At The Five And Dime, with the legendary Don Williams singing backup. The song was loved by listeners and so was the album, Walk The Way The Wind Blows, and critics loved it too. And they have loved her ever since.
The Studio Phone Rang Off The Hook During The First Play On The Radio
Over the next decade or so, she was a staple in our format recording incredible songs, winning awards and being a fantastic representative of our format. She was and is respected by virtually everyone for her passionate performances on many terrific songs. Eighteen Wheels And A Dozen Roses was a monster hit and a real listener favorite winning single of the year. Where've You Been was also single of the year and is a song that brought fans to tears - and still can and does. There was an incredible believe-ability to her, her songs and her song choices.
Great Song - Bigger Sound - New Direction
I always felt Mattea believed a very important principle. She seemed to know you can't continue to record the same album over and over again. Her sound was a series of well thought out reinventions and all of them great. She recorded amazing songs like, the emotive Where've You Been, and then terrific uptempo and empowering songs like, Walking Away A Winner. The latter, a slick reinvention and a song that propped her up, without tearing others down within the song. Great move and a wonderful example of real savvy. I always felt back then that I was listening to a real grown up adult singing and that really resonated with many fans. Empowering songs through her own strength, without hatred and bitterness towards others within the song.
First Hit Song -
Yes there are numbers if you must, 30 singles, 4 #1's, Grammy, ACM and CMA awards. There are tons of Gold Albums, and a couple Platinum ones too. She's collaborated with a who's who of music from about every genre, as the list is long. Many wanted, and were honored to have their voice next to hers, as she is universally respected as one of the best pure vocalists ever in our format. I was honored and proudly played all of her songs on radio stations all over the country. I was also proud also to have her in our format for every reason. Her talent, her grace, and who she was.
Yes, there were others with more #1's and more sales, as there always is. But I can't say enough good things about Kathy Mattea.
