Randy Travis – Just A Matter Of Time - 1989
Yeah it's a remake, beit a savvy one. And we're going to treat this actual song with the proper respect it deserves. Many times remakes are a tribute to the original, like Brooks And Dunn's, My Maria. That was not overly far from the B.W. Stevenson original which was great! This song by Randy Travis was arranged very different from the original and the other of versions of this classic. But the deeper beauty of this was, it was not so far away it forgot Brook Benton's 1959 Pop Version of this remarkably well written song. This was done earlier by country giants too like Sonny James #1 and Glen Campbell #7. But the Travis version was a real smash, with his big warm voice and the terrific use of the bass background vocals. This went #1 for Travis as his 10th number one song, and was his last release of the 1980's. At this time Travis couldn't do anything wrong, fans just wanted to hear him sing his next big hit. You also don't hear many songs like this sung from the man's perspective and that also made it stand out. Of all the great Randy Travis songs, this is my favorite. But not forgetting his classic, On The Other Hand, is still one of the most important country songs ever, as it completely changed the direction of the format. But this is a favorites list, and who knows, OTOH may show up higher on my list, still have 20 to go!
