WYNN - BROWNS - SQW

Written by

SW small Logo This week the Browns begin their 2023 season with the Hall Of Fame Game in Canton against the Jets.  After last years disappointing season, we are hoping for better.  But clearly this game with the Jets this week will tell us nothing, as I am sure most of regulars will not play.

Today, we will look at the the Browns SQW's. Strengths, Questions and Weaknesses as they are right now.  These are all honest and fair observations and reality of the Browns, so let's check them out.

The Browns are an interesting team.  Fix some of this stuff and be a playoff contender.  Don't  - and win about 7 games.

Strengths:

The Offense -  With the talent they have today, they will score their share of points.  It really should not be a problem.  They have a capable QB, and plenty of decent players to be pretty darn good. The leagues best?  No, but scoring should not be an issue.

An Offensive Minded Coach -  Kevin Stefanski is a very good offensive mind who has a creative scheme with many pieces to work with.  Be-it, some are overrated.  But his offensive knowledge is deep.

The Offensive Line  -  When healthy, they are as good as any in the NFL.  They are the backbone of everything they want to to.

Nick Chubb  - Best running back in the NFL.  Should be used plenty, but that seems to be up for debate.  In any case, he is a terrific player.

A New Defensive Coach  -  Lots of talk about how great he is, we will see as the defense last year was dreadful by any measure.  They scapegoated Coach Woods because that was easy to do.  We'll see if he was the issue.  Hoping for far better.

Miles Garrett  -  He's as good as anyone at his position, and this year it is said he will be real difference maker.

Questions:

Will This Defense Be A Lot Better? -  It needs to be.  This off season, they acquired some new pieces, but none of them are long time proven difference makers who are at the top of their game right now.  Some have a very nice past, and some are simply unproven.  Even with a new coach, it all comes down to personnel on the field.

Can Special Teams Be Way Better? -  New coach there too.  If they want to get to the next level, the special teams will have to get way better.  Good teams have good special teams.

Will They Abandon The Run?  - Will they be so pass happy they forget they have the best running back in the NFL? That's a fair question.

Do They Have Enough Play Makers? -  This has been lacking for years here. Guys that can change the game especially on offense in an instant.  Run after catch.  Make big plays.  In defense of the team these guys are rare.

Will They Stop The Run?   -  This is huge -  as this destroyed the season last year.  Historically bad and totally embarrassing.

Weaknesses:

History And Winning Culture - They have 222 losses in the last 20 years, which is a gigantic weight to carry.  The players don't per say, but the fans and city do, its a real thing with this franchise.

Kevin Stefanski - As a head coach, many of his in game decisions are amateurish and I don't feel he is a good motivator of men.  It also appears he washes his hands of the defense and side steps accountability everywhere he can.  By far, the weakest head coach in a tough division.  He needs to be much better.

The Front Office - Has whiffed on many draft picks and traded away a bunch more. Some acquisitions have been good, but there is a tendency to overestimate players. The pressure is on them with Watson this year, is he worth it?

Zero Accountability  -  #1 Weakness - The entire franchise would lead you to believe they win 13 games every year.  The Browns appear blind to the troubles on the field. They need to say, "We were wrong" once in a while.  But with these guys, it's about being right, instead of doing right.  One would think with all that Ivy League background, they would be smart enough to get the right players on the field at the right time, doing what they do best.  But when was the last time Harvard, or Yale was in the College Football Playoffs?

Analytics - There is a definite place for them, but not every play, every day.

Many of the issues are not the players on the field, the franchise can be their own worst enemy.

GO BROWNS!
