We all want the Browns to win, and it's a shame this season has gone badly. Here, I write honestly because it's the right thing to do. I have nothing to gain from the Browns by sugar coating things. I was amused in the off season listening to many in local media talk of 13-4 or 12-5 for this team, as I felt there was no way we were going there. I figured 8 wins was feasible, but that's mediocre and I wish we were that good right now.
As we are approach the halfway point you would think adjustments would have been made by - someone. But there seems to be few. You know the numbers on offense, they're despicable. What we have done after a few bad losses is roll the same QB out there, looking the same, with the same cast that can't stop committing junior high penalties and mistakes. Even watching us score is agonizing as it's generally after a long possession, that we have had sacks, penalties, mistakes and marginal plays and somehow we score, but it isn't often. Other teams score far more often and look good doing it.
Now change is here as Watson is out for the year with an Achilles injury. This could change his career forever, as he may never be the same athlete with his legs, or with confidence that it won't happen again. His mobility is a huge part of his game. This is awful for the Browns, but not really on the field, because he's among the worst QB's in the league. But the salary cap is now shredded and his cap hit for 2 more years beyond this one with little or no play is the stuff of unimaginable financial nightmares. As of today, Watson will have played in only 18 of the last 59 games he could have in the NFL for various reasons with two different teams since 2021. The Browns didn't ask for this, but they certainly invited and signed it.
Today the Ravens come to town. The second of a three game home stand, and they are really good, and we are really bad. So today, it looks like Jameis Winston will lead the team, or Bailey Zappe, who we just signed. For some reason that no one anywhere fully understands, DTR was the backup QB last week. They say Berry "loves him", his 5th round draft pick, and I'm sure he's a good dude. But we're talking the NFL here with full grown men. At least they won't be able to kill him out there today as it doesn't take a genius to see, DTR right now is overmatched at this level.
There is not one part of this team that's playing well right now. The defense has been pretty good at times, and not so at others. But offense, special teams and between the ears is about as bad as you will see with an NFL team. Glad to see our on the field dance routines from our players who make a decent and meaningless play in the fourth quarter down 15 points at 1-5 are still on point. They do look good.
Go Back to December, what the heck has happened? Then - with Watson out injured and rehabbing in California, the Browns were playing as exciting of a brand of football as they had in 25 years. Flacco was great, we were winning scoring 30 points a game, the defense was tough, Stefanski was happy, the town was Browns crazy as we went to the playoffs. Those are just facts.
Now that seems like a lifetime ago, but it's just 10 months. I fully understand that not every team can win, that's the nature of the league. I go Back To December all the time.
GO BROWNS!
