WYNN - Eat Of The Week

I love cheese!  You love cheese!  How many things in life are better than cheese?  Not a lot.  But I ran across this article about cheese and it was eye opening.  Granted, my cheese intake will never change simply because it's one of life's great gifts to us.  But this is a interesting read.

WYNN - BROWNS - The Wake Up Call

SW small Logo This off week is most welcome for the Browns.  They need it after taking a real butt-whippin' last week at home against the Ravens.  Now two weeks to prepare for maybe the NFL's best team right now, the 49ers.

Last weeks loss was understandable with your QB out on very short notice and a tough opponent in town from your division.  But being non-competitive was inexcusable. Last weeks loss was an organizational loss and on Stefanski as well.  This organization off the field continues to make gigantic mistakes that come to roost.  This off season they gutted the running back room which was a real strength and now is a liability.  I wrote and warned against this here a couple weeks ago.  But being fair, no one saw the Nick Chubb injury ahead - BUT you have to consider that possibility.

"The running back position has gone from the best and deepest in the NFL to a big question mark. Chubb is the best there is no doubt, but will they use him right? And a big injury there could be a huge problem."    9/10/23  (There Is No Excuse)

And they made a ridiculous decision to make their backup QB a rookie, never being on an NFL field. There is NO clear thinking that honestly believes a raw rookie QB could be effectively tossed into the fire of a team with the playoffs in mind.  It's inexcusable and just -  not near smart.  I wrote about that too......

"They have a backup QB with ZERO NFL experience. OK, if Watson gets really hurt the competitive season is over.  But asking a rookie to win you games for maybe a month or so if you need to is a very big ask."  9/10/23  (There Is No Excuse)

Well the last couple of weeks was the wake up call this team needed, but I'm not sure they heard.  These and other off season decisions are ones that kill a team regardless of who else is left on the field.   They have signed Kareem Hunt a fan favorite, but honestly  - that's what was out there.  They can't really trade and sign a big time running back because they have no real draft capital to trade, still having one more year to clear out the Watson deal.  They seemed to get it right with the new kicker and I'm glad to see this. But many other choices are just awful.  These are NOT choices made by top shelf teams that have big dreams.  And this franchise still takes no accountability for many of these sophomoric decisions.

Stafanski put DTR in a no win situation, but had no choice.  Clearly he was not ready, but was asked to throw almost 40 passes in an important game  -  that was just clownish and on the coach. They were out manned, out coached, out prepared and in the end, out classed by a far better run organization. Who by the way had a TON of injuries themselves.  Both losses this year are by far better run teams.  Now here comes the best team in the NFL.

After this game the Browns will end that early season schedule that so many were whining about.  Tough teams, blah blah.... I think it was a gift to them they have not taken advantage of.  4 of the first 5 games at home. The Bengals were hurt, the Steelers are not real good right now, the Titans were average and we had them at home, and the Ravens were at home. Then two weeks off to prepare for the 49ers.  Now with Watson hurting no one is whining about the early season schedule now.  I never understood the problem with a lot of home games at the start against good teams.  I mean, what's the problem?

Next week is not a must win.  It's far to early for that, but falling to 2-3 after all that home schedule would be an opportunity missed.  The good news there are some very winnable games up the road and it's their job to get that done.

To get where you want to go, you need to do what first class organizations do. Have the right people in the right place at the right time, getting football right.

On This (Super) Harvest Moon!

If you read my blog about the super blue moon we had at the end of August, you know I dig it when there's a full moon in the night sky. This time around, it is yet again a supermoon, albeit a less rare one. The full Harvest moon makes for the third supermoon we have been graced with within two months and it comes just two days after the moon reaches perigree, it's nearest point of orbit to earth.

It might be tough, if not futile, to see that big piece of cheese up there for the overnight into Friday, as mostly cloudy skies are forecasted through morning time. Friday night into Saturday seems like a better chance to catch it, and although it isn't technically full, you or I supposedly can't tell the difference as casual stargazers anyways. Here's a great resource if you'd like to learn more about the phenomena:  https://www.space.com/38006-september-full-moon.html.

If you're having a bonfire or just out and about this weekend, make sure to check out that Harvest Super Moon!

WYNN - BROWNS - Get Out Front!

SW small Logo So far so good for the Browns overall.  The Steeler game was a big bag of ugliness, but a nice win at home over the Titans got things back in balance.  The talk of the NFL right now (except for Taylor Swift)  is the Browns defense. So far it has been beyond great, and that's a huge relief.

But let's be honest.  Week one Cincy - Burrow clearly not right, bad weather, at home, and not the Bengals we will see the last week of the season.  Week two Pittsburgh - Weak offense there, Pickett average at best and their defense outscored their own offense.  Week three Tennessee  - Very average offense to say the least with a marginal QB at home again.

But this is interesting. Look ahead at much of the Browns remaining games.  A lot of average QB's and offenses to deal with.  True, Lemar comes to town this week, and we'll see him again.  Burrow week 18, and the San Francisco offense with Purdy and a lot of play makers in a truly great system, but that's at home.  Beyond that, who else?  Aaron Rogers is out for the year and a lot of your road schedule is easier than most.  There are rookie QB's too and Jacksonville with Lawrence?  Yeah, he's good but so far they haven't put it together.  This is the seasonal schedule that you would hope for and this is year to get it done.  It WILL NOT line up like this again.

So here's the formula.  Get out front.  Get the lead in games and in the division and let others try to catch us. This is smart for a few reasons.  One, we are NOT a come from behind team under Stefanski.  I think its 1-24 when we trail by 4 or more points in the fourth quarter.  Worst in the NFL.  But with this defense, if we have a fourth quarter lead, I'm feeling pretty good.  When the Browns went up 17-3 last week with plenty of game to go, I knew the game was over.  Titans mediocre offense and our defense.  Done!  After decades of blowing late game leads, it feels good to feel that's not going to happen this season.

In the division too.  This week if you win, you'll be 3-1, in first place and 2-1 in the division.  But if you lose, you are caught in the pack of the 2-2 er's and 1-2 in the division and you're doing it the hard way again.  With this defense, this teams biggest priority should be to get any kind of lead in games and the standings and make others try climb over our elite defense.  I feel that it came from the very top about our embarrassing defense, that last year was unacceptable and jobs were on the line, get it fixed.

We will score enough points to win.  I'm not worried about Watson, he'll be good enough with this defense. He needs to quit thinking it's all on him.  It's not, with our defense, he's just a player now not a savior.  And expensive one, but just a darn good player.  What's sad is, if they would have worried about having a defense this good a couple years ago, they could have saved at least 100 million and a bunch of draft picks.  But that is the danger of hiring a strictly offensive minded head coach.  Watson and Stefanski now above everything else, have to be smart.  But, that could be a big ask.  Lots of ego on the line there, but it's imperative for success.

Just get a lead, be smart, and get wins. That's all that matters.  It's the ultimate irony.  A coach that has distanced himself from it, now has a team that is built on and will rely heavily on  - defense.  Some things don't change. In this Superbowl Era, many teams that have won the most titles have been defense heavy - Steelers, Giants, Cowboys, 49ers, Ravens, Bucs, even the Chiefs today don't give up a lot of points.  And some of those teams don't get the credit for being great defensively, but they were.

For the first time in a very long time, be the team that is being chased.  You have the tools now to do it.

SW small Logo This week Country Mega Star Ronnie Milsap performed his final concert in Nashville as part of a star-studded tribute to him at Bridgestone Arena. He has made it clear, he is NOT retiring, just finding other avenues for his talents.  He is 80.  For many years, Milsap could be found on top of the country and pop charts with over 40 number one songs.  He may be the best pure male vocalist we have ever had.  His range was incredible and his song choices were about perfect.   Let's look back at his remarkable career with my article I wrote about him a year or two ago.

My Top Ten: Movies!

There are so many great films out there, and everybody has their favorites. For me, I like a movie that isn't too difficult to follow, has a good soundtrack, and has a solid storyline free of any frustrating major plot holes. I like everything from action movies to foreign art films, but as you'll notice in my top ten, comedy and animated ones tend to be my prefrence. Sometimes I just need a good chuckle, and other times I like to have my emotions stirred.

When I first started doing these Thursday Top Ten blogs, I figured it would be an easy way to write about something everyone can relate to. I had no idea how difficult it would be to settle upon my choices for these, as I like what I like and what that is could be different on any given day. Naturally, I will forget to include some stuff or will change my mind on the order, but all in all it is a lot of fun! (Side note: should I be doing The Tuesday Top Ten? It rolls off the tongue better, I think).

Well, here's the list for my ten favorite movies; are any of these on your list?

10. Zombieland

9. Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas

8. Hot Rod

7. The Simpsons Movie

6. Talladega Nights

5. The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie

4. The Fast and the Furious

3. Cars

2. Fight Club

1. Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World

*Bonus!* WQMX Weeknight Host Eric Matthews' Top 5 Movies:

5. Halloween IV

4. Scream

3. Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid

2. Mrs. Doubtfire

1. Airplane!

I am too hyped for the "Scott Pilgrim Takes Off" anime coming to Netflix November 17th. I've read and own the graphic novel series, I have played the video game, and I have watched the movie literally hundreds of times. If you've never seen Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World, my favorite movie, you can peep the trailer here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7wd5KEaOtm4
