WYNN - #21- Achy, Breaky Heart - Billy Ray Cyrus -1992

Written by

Yeah I know nobody likes this song, that's why it sold 20 million copies.  This song has an interesting past. It was written by an amateur songwriter, Don Van Tress, and recorded with another title, Don't Tell My Heart by a group called the Marcy Brothers. Then was turned down by the Oak Ridge Boys and somehow ended up with a no name young artist, and the rest is history.  Seldom has one song, made such a gigantic difference in one man's career.  But what makes this song very important is this.  As country was surging from the talent flood of the late 80's, this song not only rode that wave, and made it a Tsunami.  This song was the driving force for his Some Gave All album that to date has sold over 20 million and is still the biggest selling debut album of all time.  This song was a phenomenon, as it led to the line dancing explosion of the early 1990's.  Little kids loved it, teens loved it, adults too, and so did Nana and Pappy.  It went number one world wide, and was jet fuel in the country music engine that was already racing.  The first time I heard this song, I was the Program Coordinator and Morning Man at KLIK in Jefferson City, Missouri.  Our Music Director, the late Jay Walker came into my office and played it for me. I thought we should add it right out of the box, he totally agreed, almost unheard for an unknown artist. We both felt it was a smash and we were one of the first stations in the USA to play it.  Whether you you love or hate this song, it's one of the biggest country hits of all time.  BTW - That album is pretty darn good, and Some Gave All  is a terrific song that fans still love to hear.
