WYNN - #15 - Daddy's Hands - Holly Dunn 1986

Written by

This is one of the most popular and most successful #7 hit songs of all time.  Fans loved this when it came out for many reasons.  First, it was an exceedingly honest and relatable song.  Second, they loved Holly Dunn's wonderful vulnerable delivery and fans were at the beginning embraces of the shift in country music.  This simple song is extremely important for the fact that it as much as any announced that the era of the pop country, middle of the road, vanilla sound was over.  She joined a group of new artists led by Randy Travis that dared to shift us to traditional, but at the same time, it was a "new traditional."  It was a different throwback sound  and a "throwforward"  (if that's a word) sound all at the same time.  This song made a lot of people realize that they liked traditional country.  It was also a song that was as requested as any song I can remember at the time of its release.  Being honest, we hadn't had a lot of songs this passionate in quite a while and this really resonated with fans. Holly Dunn, along with Patty Loveless led the charge for a new sound for women in country at this moment, and that was a very big deal too as they really opened a new door.   Still loved after all this time, sung perfectly by the incredible Holly Dunn.
